Privacy Policy
Last updated:
This policy explains how Nearby Share at nearbyshare.app processes information when you visit the website or transfer files. No account is required to use the file transfer tool.
1. Your files and local previews
Selected files and image or video previews are processed locally in your browser. File contents are sent directly to the receiving device over an encrypted WebRTC connection after the recipient accepts. Our signaling service does not relay, upload or store file contents.
The recipient receives the filenames, sizes and files you choose to send. A completed download is under the recipient's control; cancelling a transfer cannot remove a file already downloaded. Incomplete files are not saved by the tool. Browser memory, temporary caches and downloads are managed by your browser and operating system.
2. Device discovery and connection information
When discovery connects, our Cloudflare signaling service receives your public IP address and registration metadata, including a device name, short device ID, browser or device description, protocol version and connection token. Devices with a matching public IPv4 address or IPv6 /64 prefix are grouped to discover each other. Other connected devices in that group can see your device name and registration metadata; sharing a network exit does not guarantee that every device is on your physical Wi-Fi.
WebRTC negotiation messages exchange information needed to establish a direct connection, which can include network addresses and ports. During connection setup, the browser may contact Cloudflare's STUN service to discover an additional connection address. STUN helps establish a connection and does not carry file contents.
4. Optional usage analytics
If you allow analytics, we use Google Analytics to measure page visits and basic interactions such as file selection, send attempts, transfer outcomes, file counts, total file sizes and elapsed transfer time. Google may process device and browser information, approximate location and identifiers. We do not intentionally send file contents, filenames, device aliases, signaling tokens or WebRTC negotiation messages to Google Analytics. Page URLs sent by our integration exclude query strings and fragments.
Analytics helps us understand how the website is used and improve reliability. Retention and processing of analytics data depend on our Google Analytics settings and Google's services. Your choice does not affect device discovery or file transfer.
5. Hosting, security and retention
Cloudflare hosts the website and signaling infrastructure and may process request metadata for delivery, network security and abuse prevention. A hashed network-group identifier selects the discovery room. This is a technical identifier, not a guarantee of anonymity. Online device information is held in WebSocket attachments; persistent hourly counters enforce rate limits and are replaced when activity resumes in a new hour.
Connection metadata is used to provide discovery, negotiate transfers and protect the service. Infrastructure logs and analytics data may have different retention periods based on provider and account settings. We do not promise that closing a page deletes every infrastructure record immediately.
6. Service providers and international processing
Cloudflare provides hosting, signaling and STUN assistance. Google provides optional analytics after your consent. These providers may process information in locations outside your country under their own service terms and privacy policies. We do not sell your file contents or provide them to these services for analytics.
7. Your choices and privacy requests
You can reject optional analytics, update your choice in Cookie settings, clear browser site data, close the page to disconnect discovery, and cancel an active transfer. Do not use a personal or sensitive device name on a network you do not trust.
Depending on the laws that apply to you, you may have rights to access, correct, delete or restrict processing of personal information and to complain to a relevant privacy regulator. Contact us using the email below. Because this service does not require an account, we may need additional information to identify a relevant record without requesting your files.
8. Changes and contact
We may update this policy as the service changes. The date above identifies the latest revision. Contact us for privacy questions, requests or concerns.
